Falcons Challenge Tuscarora before Falling, 36-23
September 15, 2017
With less than eight minutes remaining in the game, trailing 28-23, Briar Woods safety Scott Blair intercepted a Tuscarora Huskies pass in their end zone, giving the Falcons a first down on their twenty. On his way to a 159 yard rushing performance, Ryan Walther rushed for nine yards, followed by a 16 yard completion from quarterback Justin Rutkowski to slot back Joseph Groves. The Falcons were driving toward the end zone with a first down 55 yards from the end zone and a lead. Walther got the call and gained 10 yards. But dragging Huskie defenders with him, the ball got punched out of his hands by Chris Broad and recovered by Renny Adjei who advanced the ball 20 yards into Falcon territory. A minute later Huskie running back Leron West scored on a seven yard touchdown run extending their lead to what would be the final score, 36-23. Tuscarora is now 3-1 while the Falcons drop to 0-4.
West was the difference in this game. On 32 carries he gained 196 yards, scoring four touchdowns. Most of his runs were in the two-through-eight yard category through heavy traffic. The Falcon defense found themselves in third and short all night as Tuscarora gained 296 yards on the ground and 19 first downs.
The Falcons running game was effective, racking up 178 yards. Rutkowski threw for another 119 yards, but it wasn’t enough to neutralize the Huskies’ time consuming offense.
The game’s first score came with 1:22 left in the first quarter on a three yard run by West. The Falcons immediately responded with a 10 play, 75 yard touchdown drive with Walther scoring on a one yard dive followed by Eddie Moreno’s extra point kick.
Tuscarora took advantage of a short punt which was returned 47 yards to the Briar Woods 16 by Alex Lee. Four plays later West’s two yard touchdown gave the home team a 14-7 lead. Again, the Falcons responded when Walther broke free for a 62 yard touchdown run. With 2:44 remaining in the half it looked like the Falcons would get into the halftime locker room with the score tied. Huskie quarterback ruined those plans with a 46 yard run followed three plays later by his one yard touchdown.
The Falcons received the second half kickoff and drove the ball to the Tuscarora 19 before settling for a 36 yard field goal by Moreno. A pooch-kickoff and a 31 yard return by Owen Carey put the Huskies 47 yards away from the goal line. Five straight carries by West resulted in his fourth touchdown giving his team a 28-17 lead.
Briar Woods put themselves in a position to win the game on a 57 yard touchdown pass, Rutkowski to Ike Dove as the third quarter came to an end. But that would be the final Falcon score.
Three Falcon defenders had 10 tackles: Groves and Camden Gillie at linebacker and defensive back Danny McMinn.
The Falcons get back to their home field next Thursday when they host the 0-4 Freedom Eagles.
