The Briar Woods varsity softball team opened the 2018 season with a 15-2 loss to host Loudoun County Tuesday night in Leesburg.
The Raiders scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before erupting for seven runs in the second behind a trio of two-run homers. The hosts tacked on another run in the third to open a 9-0 cushion.
The Falcons got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Junior Abby Arabia started the inning by getting hit by a pitch, and senior Caroline Bird laced a triple to bring Arabia around. Junior Caitlin Nee later grounded out to drive in Bird.
Loudoun County added five more runs in the home half of the fourth.
Briar Woods threatened in the top of the fifth, as sophomore Morgan Maxwell singled and fellow sophomore Nicole Karagiorgis walked to give the Falcons a pair of runners on with no outs. However, a fly out, line out and pop out squashed the scoring threat and brought the game to a close.
Maxwell led the Falcons with a pair of hits, while Karagiorgis singled in addition to her walk.
"County has a very talented and veteran team, and they are strong in every facet," said Falcon head coach Chris Starke. "I am very proud of how we stayed together and put forth great effort. This is just the first game of the season, and we will take this experience and look to get better from it."
