Briar Woods High School 5
Potomac Falls HS 6

The Briar Woods varsity softball team rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to tie the game but visiting Potomac Falls scored in the top of the sixth and held off a pair of late Falcon scoring opportunities to claim a 6-5 win Tuesday night in Ashburn.

Potomac Falls scored a run in the first, three in the second and another in the third to build its 5-0 advantage before the Falcons got on the board in the third on a two-run single by senior Caroline Bird that scored sophomores Morgan Maxwell and Nicole Karagiorgis, who both had reached on singles.

The Falcons then pulled even with three runs in the fifth. Maxwell started the rally by getting hit by a pitch, and Karagiorgis followed with a single that was misplayed and allowed Maxwell to score from first and Karagiorgis to advance to third. After sophomore Casey Embrey drew a walk, Bird hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Karagiorgis. Sophomore Katie Ariganello later singled home Embrey to tie the game.

The tie was short-lived, however, as Potomac Falls used a leadoff triple and one-out single to score the winning run in the top of the sixth.

The Falcons created chances to tie in their last two at-bats. In the sixth, Karagiorgis singled and stole second but was stranded.

In the seventh, Briar Woods had runners on first and second with both one and two out but couldn't come up with the clutch hit.

Bird drove in three runs, while Karagiorgis had three hits and scored twice. Nee added two hits and a walk.

"I was proud of how the girls stuck together and rallied to tie the game after being down early," said Briar Woods head coach Chris Starke. "We put ourselves in position to tie or even win the game late, which is all you can ask for. Our defense showed vast improvement tonight, and we had a lot of hard hit balls, unfortunately a few were right at people. It was a great effort overall and we had some nice positives to move forward with."

The Falcons are back in action Friday at Tuscarora starting at 6 pm.
