STONE BRIDGE HS: 12 (5)
The Briar Woods varsity softball team dropped a 12-2 decision in five innings to host Stone Bridge in Potomac District action Tuesday night in Ashburn.
Stone Bridge (6-0, 3-0 Potomac District) struck for five quick runs in the first inning and tacked on five more in the fourth and two more in the fifth to bring the game to an early end.
The Falcons (3-5, 1-2) had a chance to score in the top of the first, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but a strikeout squashed the opportunity.
The Bulldogs took advantage of two walks, three errors and two hits in the bottom of the inning to build an early 5-0 lead.
Briar Woods got on the board in the third as freshman Sydney Rutledge reached on an error and eventually advanced to third before scoring on a two-hit single by senior Caroline Bird.
Stone Bridge increased its lead to 10-1 with a five-run fourth before the Falcons added another run in the fifth. Sophomore Nicole Karagiorgis battled through a lengthy at-bat before drawing a walk. She then moved to second on a ground out and raced home on a double by Bird. Bird took third on a passed ball but was stranded to end the frame.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to close out the scoring.
Karagiorgis allowed 10 runs, but just four earned, and six hits in four innings.
Bird went 2-for-3 and drove in both runs for the Falcons.
“This was a tough game against an excellent Stone Bridge team,” said Falcon head coach Chris Starke. “We had an opportunity in the first inning to take the lead but couldn’t come up with the big hits, and we made some miscues in the field that led to six unearned runs. You can’t give teams extra outs and expect to be competitive, especially against a team as deep and as talented as Stone Bridge. Overall, it was a good effort on our part, but we need to keep improving in all areas.”
