Varsity Softball Drops Home Opener to Freedom

Game Date
Apr 6, 2018

The Briar Woods varsity softball team dropped is home opener to Freedom 4-0 in Potomac District action Friday night in Ashburn.

The Falcons (3-4, 1-1 Potomac District) hung tough with the Eagles, trailing 1-0 heading into the seventh, but Freedom added three runs with two outs in their final at bat to pull away.

Briar Woods worked around a one-out double in the first to keep Freedom off the board and stranded a runner of its own in the bottom of the opening frame.

In the second, the Falcons turned the first of their two double plays of the game to again thwart an Eagle rally. In the home half of the innings, junior Abby Arabia singled with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Katie Ariganello, but Freedom used a strikeout to end the threat.

Freedom (5-1, 2-0), which was last year’s 4A state runner-up before joining 5A this season, broke through in the third on a bases-loaded walk, but the teams then traded scoreless frames over the next three innings.

Katie Ariganello legged out an infield single to open the fifth but was thrown out on a close play at second trying to advance on a passed ball. Junior Payton Minnick then singled and stole second, but she was stranded to end the inning.

The Falcons retired the Eagles in order in both the fifth and sixth innings, but the visitors struck for three runs with two outs in the seventh to create some breathing room.

Briar Woods put together its best rally in the bottom of the seventh. Arabia reached on a fielder’s choice and raced to third on a two-out single by freshman Abby Kleinschmidt to give the Falcons runners at the corners, but a pop up closed out the game.

The Falcons managed just five singles from five different players, were 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and stranded six baserunners.

Sophomore Nicole Karagiorgis went the distance for Briar Woods. She was masterful through her first six innings, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out three.

“Our team put forth a great effort tonight against a very strong and experienced Freedom squad,” Briar Woods head coach Chris Starke said. “Our pitcher did a great job of keeping us in the game, but we just couldn’t get a clutch hit. Freedom’s pitcher did a tremendous job keeping us off balance, and we didn’t square up anything. But, I was extremely proud of how we battled until the final out. We’ll take this game and learn from it as the season progresses.”
