Falcons Now 0-3 after 48-14 Loss to Brooke Point

Brambleton, VA

September 8, 2017

The Briar Woods Falcons third opponent of the 2017 season was yet another team that went deep into the 2016 playoffs in the Brooke Point Black Hawks. Staring their 2017 campaign with two victories by a combined margin of 80-13, the Black Hawks continued their dominance with a 48-14 at the Falcons’ Nest.

The opening kickoff foreshadowed the evening activities when 0Tre Ross returned the opening kickoff 97 yards as the Black Hawks took a 7-0 lead. Five minutes later Ross scored again on the receiving end of a 76 yard touchdown pass from QB Paul Pierce.

Midway into the second quarter the Falcons made a bid to get back into the game after Falcon Danny McMinn came up with his third interception in as many games giving the Falcons a first down on their 16 yard line. Quarterback Justin Rutkowski hit Jackson Casillas for 20 yards, Joseph Groves for 16, and Ike Dove for 20. Rutkowski covered the last 12 yards of the drive on a running play ending in the end zone. Kicker Edgar Moreno’s extra point made the score 14-7 with 5:28 left in the half.

The Black Hawks took advantage of the time remaining driving down the field as far as the Falcon three yard line, before the drive stalled. K Bryce Roth’s 21 yard field goal gave Brooke Pointe a 17-7 halftime lead.

Receiving the second half kickoff the Falcons had a chance to draw closer but couldn’t lay claim to the bouncing kickoff. Brooke Point had the ball 33 yards from the Falcon end zone and on their first play from scrimmage RB Xavier Smith sped into the end zone. The score was 24-7 and Briar Woods’ comeback chances were dimmed.

The Black Hawks would find the end zone two more times in the third quarter on Pierce’s eight yard touchdown pass to Joshua Lawrence and Christian Thompson’s 11 yard scoring run. Falcons’ running back Ryan Walther found the end zone on a one yard dive but by the end of the third quarter the Falcons were in a 45-14 hole. Roth converted a 38 yard field for the fourth quarter’s only scoring play to account for the final margin.

The Falcons have a week off before hosting Tuscarora on September 22. They will try to build on their positives for the next seven games, all against Loudoun County neighbors. Sophomore Ryan Walther has established himself as a reliable ground gainer with 201 yards on 44 carries. Junior Justin Rutkowski in his first year of varsity competition has improved with every game. This game was his best as he completed 8 of 15 passes for 105 yards and a touchdown in addition to gaining 35 rushing yards on seven carries with a touchdown. Senior Ike Dove and sophomore Joseph Groves have been Rutkowski’s favorite receivers this season with seven and six receptions. Both average 15 yards per catch. On defense junior Danny McMinn became the first Falcon ever to intercept a pass in three straight games and has contributed 21 tackles. Sophomore Logan Kotter leads all defenders with 28 tackles, 3.5 of which have been for a loss.
